Q: Is the Access Point 530 plenum rated? Only the North America version (J8986A) is plenum rated. The international version (J8987A) of the Access Point 530 is not plenum rated. Q: What version of Sun Java is required or supported by the Web UI? The Web User Interface does not require Sun Java, only a common web browser such as; Microsoft Internet Explorer version 5.5 or higher. Q: What cable and settings do I need to establish a console session through the serial port on the Access Point 530? The console cable required for the Access Point 530 is a DB-9 female-to-female serial cable. This cable is the same console cable that is used on many ProCurve switches. The Access Point 530 does not ship with a console cable. In your terminal emulator, such as HyperTerminal, use the following setting: Baud rate (or bits per second): 9600 Data bits: 8 Parity: None Stop bits: 1 Flow Control: None For more details, please see the ProCurve Wireless Access Point 530 Installation and Getting Started Guide Q: When using the Web UI, is a command required to save the running-configuration to startup-configuration? Changes made through the Web user interface are immediately applied to the Startup-configuration, whereas changes made through the CLI interface are only made to the running-configuration, and must be saved using the "copy" or "write memory" command if they are to persist following a reboot. Q: What is the meaning of the term "Closed System"? A "closed system" prohibits the broadcasting of the AP's SSID. The network name will also not be displayed in the List of Available Networks on a client station. (Default is disabled, allowing SSID broadcasting). Q: Can the Access Point 530 accept VLAN assignment parameters from a RADIUS server? Yes, a VLAN ID can be assigned to each client after successful authentication using IEEE 802.1X and a central RADIUS server. Q: How many Wireless Distribution System (WDS) links can the Access Point 530 support? Each Access Point 530 supports up to six (6) WDS links to remote access points. Q: Is there a hop count limitation when connecting multiple Access Point 530s in series using WDS? There is no "hop count" limit, but bandwidth will be limited as more hops are added, to a point where throughput will become unacceptable. Q: Would STP protocol be required with WDS links? It is a recommended practice to enable Spanning Tree Protocol (STP) whenever one or more WDS links are configured into a wireless network. STP is automatically enabled on the Access Point 530. As STP operation is applied at the WDS interfaces and Ethernet port, in order for proper STP operation, the switch to which the access point is connected needs to have STP enabled. Q: Will existing clients associated to the Access Point 530 lose their connection during a periodic scan of neighboring APs? No, the periodic AP detection scan is designed to avoid traffic interruptions and will not disassociate normal wireless stations. Q: Can the Access Point 530 support Link Layer Discovery Protocol (LLDP) on the Ethernet side and on the wireless side of the network? LLDP traffic is supported on the Ethernet side only. LLDP traffic is not sent out on the wireless side of the network. Q: What is the maximum number of station connections per radio? Is there any difference between 802.11a and 802.11g radios? The maximum number of stations is 256 per radio. There is no difference between the two radios for maximum number of users. Q: Can the Web UI be used for all configuration tasks? No, the Web User Interface can be used for most configuration tasks. The CLI can be used for all configuration tasks. Q: Can the Access Point 530 support a minimum connection speed? There is not a minimum connection speed per station, but per radio it is possible to enable or disable support rates in the CLI and the Web UI. Q: What is the default username and password for the Access Point 530? The default login ID settings are "admin" for both username and password. Q: How do you set up an IP address on the AP? In the factory default configuration, the access point is configured as a DHCP client. However, if you want to manually give the access point an IP address so that it can communicate on your network, HP recommends that you use the CLI to quickly configure IP addressing. To do so, do one of the following: Login to the CLI Interface using the default username and password ("admin/admin"). Q: Is the Access Point 530 IEEE 802.11h compliant? Yes, the IEEE 802.11h is automatically applied based on the radio mode and the country of operation. Q: What is the maximum number of MAC addresses filtered by the Access Point 530? The Access Point 530 supports up to 200 MAC addresses in its filtering table, but managing a large number of MAC addresses across more than one access point quickly becomes very cumbersome. Q: Can the Access Point 530 broadcast SSIDs for all WLANs? Yes, the Access Point 530 is able to broadcast beacons for all 16 WLANs. Q: Is it possible to filter the communication between stations on the same radio? Yes, but it is a global configuration, so enabling the setting will block inter-station communication within the same radio on the same AP. Q: What is the maximum number of user ACLs supported by the Access Point 530? Per-user ACL is part of the ProCurve Identity Driven Manager (IDM) security and access control features. Each radio supports up to 256 stations and each AP supports two radios, for a total up to 512 per-user ACLs. Q: How many users (information) can be stored in the local RADIUS Database? Up to 100 users (information) can be stored in the local RADIUS database. Q: What is the backup file format for the local Radius User Account information database? The default file name is wirelessUsers.ubk. The file name can be edited, but do not change the file extension (.ubk). Q: What is the maximum number of event log entries? The maximum number of event log entries is 1000. The Web UI has a limited amount of memory for containment and display of the event log. A complete list of events is available in the CLI. Q: Access Points are often deployed in unsecured areas. Can the Access Point 530 authenticate itself to the network via 802.1X? The Access Point 530 does not have an 802.1X supplicant, so it cannot identify itself via 802.1X. Q: What EAP type does the Access Point 530 support? The Access Point 530 supports all EAP type tested by the WiFi Alliance; TLS, TTLS, PEAP0/MSCHAPv2, PEAP1/GTC and SIM. Q: What EAP type is support on the internal RADIUS server? The local built-in RADIUS server supports only one EAP type - PEAP-MSCHAPv2. Q: Does the Access Point 530 ship with standard antennas? The Access Point 530 has an internal antenna for radio 1 (802.11b/g) and an internal antenna for radio 2 (802.11a). To use 802.11b/g on radio 2, an external antenna must be purchased. Q: Can the internal antenna for Radio 2 be used as an AP rogue detector for 802.11b or 802.11g radios without an external antenna? No, the Radio 2 internal antenna must be configured to IEEE 802.11a mode. Radio 2 must be connected to an external antenna if Radio 2 is configured to either IEEE 802.11b or 802.11g mode. Q: How does the 3 dBi Dual Band Diversity antenna (J8997A) connect to the Access Point 530, since it has two cable connections off the antenna? The 3 dBi Dual Band Diversity antenna (J8997A), enables omni directional diversity gain for either a 2.4GHz or 5GHz radio. To enable diversity on one radio, the installer connects both antenna leads to both connectors on the Access Point 530 labeled as 2.4GHz Primary and 2.4GHz or 5GHz Primary and 5GHz. If the desire is to use this antenna for omni (non diversity) for both radios, connect one antenna lead (doesn't matter which one) to the 2.4GHz Primary connector on the radio port and the other antenna lead to the 5GHz Primary connector on the same radio port. The individual antenna elements are designed to accommodate the full frequency spectrum. This antenna is approved for use on the ProCurve Access Point 530 and the ProCurve Radio Port 220.
